Churchill starts with carefully sourced local clay and a unique blend of performance materials, precisely formulated for maximum strength, durability, and hospitality-grade performance. This super-vitrified body recipe – one of the strongest in the world – is engineered using science and centuries of know-how to deliver exceptional chip resistance, thermal shock endurance, and food safety.
The clay is prepared, shaped into high-performance designs that stand up to the busiest kitchens and dining rooms, then undergoes a rigorous two-stage firing process that’s distinctive to Churchill. Inspired by Josiah Wedgwood’s innovative methods, the first firing reaches higher temperatures (up to around 1200°C), fully vitrifying the body to close particle gaps, create a dense, impervious structure, and build incredible inherent strength. The second firing (for glazing and decoration) is at a lower temperature, preserving vibrant, fade-resistant colours and enabling brighter, more expressive designs that last.
Glazing uses Churchill’s specially developed Eco Glaze system – formulated for professional environments with superior resistance to scratching, fading, crazing, and dishwasher wear. Every stage includes continuous quality checks in their on-site UKAS-accredited laboratory: from raw materials through to the final piece, with thousands of tests annually to ensure consistency, vitrification standards, and mechanical performance.
